Doors Open Ontario is a
celebration of heritage sites and since 2002, communities throughout
Ontario have annually opened the doors to hundreds of heritage
sites. Doors Open Ontario offers communities the opportunity to
boast of their commercial buildings, courthouses, places of worship,
natural heritage and other heritage sites. Doors Open Kawartha Lakes
2006 will be focusing on historic sites in the Little Britain,
Oakwood, Manilla, Woodville, Argyle, and Cameron. Please check out

1. Oakwood United
Church
949 Hwy 7, Oakwood
Year Built: 1912 10 am
to 4 pm Service at 9 am
Built in
1912, this church represents a gracious reminder of rural
community faith. Erected from the same plans used for 3
separate churches, this place of worship holds an incredible
history, spoken through the stained glass windows inside.
Visitors will experience the beauty of a country church as
they encounter the charm of a traditional place of worship
during their tour of this site.

2. The
Country Sampler
977 Eldon Road, Oakwood
Year Built: 1865
10 am to 4 pm
For 126 years, the “Cameron
Building” has stood at the centre of Oakwood, both literally
and figuratively. Now an Antique Store, the building is
constructed of red brick with yellow brick quoining, and door
and window heads that reflect an Italianate style. Many
original interior features include the built-in wooden
shelving complete with a large cornice. Enjoy this return to
the past as you tour this historic shop!

3. Woodville
Town Hall
100-A King Street,
Woodville Year Built:
1904 10 am to 4 pm
daily
Built in
1904, this brick structure highlights interior tongue and
groove wood completely fireproofed in 2000. The
sod-turning ceremony took place August 10 by Mr. Neil McLeod,
with the opening concert taking place February 5, 1904. The
Town Hall has been the scene of many functions such as plays,
musicals, dances, banquets and has served its community well.
Visitors can look forward to a miniature wood display, as
well as other historic visual displays.

4. Morrison
Home
145 King Street, Woodville
Year Built: mid 1800’s
Built
from plans that came from Scotland, this elegant
home housed the Morrison family. Considered such a
fine edifice that a drawing appears in Belden’s Atlas
of Victoria County for 1881, this house compliments
the many other homes built for other members of the
Morri- son family in Woodville along King Street.
Showcasing a unique antique collection, interior
features include original woodwork, period windows, 4
well-furbished rooms and a tour of the servant
quarters. Visitors will enjoy a guided tour of this
architectural delight!

5. Historic King
Street
Woodville 10 am to 4
pm daily
Stroll
this street of century-old brick houses built for
Morrison family members directly across from the
family’s original home on King Street. Typical of
others in Wood ville,the homes display original
trim, porches, gables, windows, and
polychromatic brick, all excellent examples of
well-preserved 19th and early 20th
century village brick architecture. This is to be
viewed as a point of interest for tour
visitors.

Lorneville Schoolhouse

Lorneville Road, Lorneville
Year Built: 1847
Sunday: 10 am to 4 pm
Enjoy
the splendor of an authentic century schoolhouse,
renovated to today’s standards, while maintaining
it’s fundamental charm. Housed on a 1 acre lot
bordered by Maples, it was originally built in 1847
as a 1-room schoolhouse, with a second room beings
added in 1881. Step back in time as you tour this
delightful country school.

7.
Argyle General Store
270 Glenarm Rd, Argyle
Year Built: 1880
10 am to 4 pm
The
Argyle Store opened its doors in December 1880, and
was one of three stores in the little village. Now
one of the last General Stores in Ontario still in
operation, it was known far and wide for its piles
of stock, and a reputation for being able to get
anything at this General Store. Opening in 1880
and run by the Flemings since 1937, its
reputation was known far and wide. Exper- ience the
charming past of a General Store as you tour
this site.

8.
Mitchell’s Blacksmith Shop
Glenarm Road, (near
General Store in Argyle)
Point of Interest
Located
at an important crossroad in Eldon Township, this
century building housed Jack Mitchell’s vital
black- smith business for many years. In recent times
it was used to forge heritage articles. Many
original interior elements remain intact and at
present is an antique and collectibles shop. This
site will be available as a point of
interest.

9.
Knox Presbyterian
Church
419 Fenel Rd, Glenarm
Year Built: 1894
Builder: Robert Morrow

Established
in 1873 in the “Long Church” on site at Glenarm
Cemetery just south of the village, the current
structure was erected in the village in 1894.
Endowed with Highland Scots history, the interior
possesses original rich woodwork throughout. Several
artifacts will be on display, including a Memorial
Book that will be available for review. Church
ladies who have completed over 100 quilts since 1989
will be on hand demonstrating their quilting skills.
This quaint country church is sure to thrill tour
visitors.

10.
Glenarm Cemetery
Fenel Road, Glenarm
Year Established: 1873
10 am to 4 pm
Situated
a short distance south of Knox Presbyterian Church,
this was the site of the original Church of
Scotland. Although the church building is no longer
there, the pioneer cemetery contains the graves of
many early residents, some being from Islay in
Argyleshire, Scotland. Tour visitors will enjoy a
quiet stroll through the grounds.
